Grades Kindergarten through Five Student Handbook

Elementary Schools utilize PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Support), a research-based framework focused on proactive prevention rather than reaction. We explicitly teach kindness, respect, responsibility, and safety.

Prevention First: We build strong student rapport, set clear expectations, and use positive reinforcement to reward good behavior.

Data-Driven: We track disciplinary data to identify trouble spots and adjust our support strategies accordingly.

Preferred Consequences: When misbehavior occurs, we prioritize keeping students in school. Preferred interventions include restorative practices, student/parent meetings and lunch detentions.

Note: OSS (out of school suspension) will be assigned according to the student code of conduct, when appropriate. If school expectations are not met during school discipline, OSS will be assigned.

Expectations: Students must use appropriate language, respect private property, and avoid littering, loitering, or trespassing.

All emergency information is housed in MiStar. An annual update will be required for each student at the beginning of the school year and changes can be made, as needed, through the parent portal. You can also call the school office for updates to MiStar. Please make sure to include three emergency contacts.

Please make sure that parent contact information (email addresses and phone numbers) are up to date at all times. Contact information is linked to ParentSquare, which is our primary form of communication for the school district.

All information from the school district, including emergency school closures and other emergency information will be shared through ParentSquare. It is recommended that you download the app.

The MiStar Parent Portal is available as an app or online. The portal is used to update contact information, access report cards and attendance records. If you need help accessing your parent portal, please contact the school office.

Please promptly report absences through the MiStar Parent Portal or by calling the school office and provide the reason for the absence.

Attendance is taken two times per day (AM and PM). Students are considered tardy if they arrive after 8:10 a.m. and absent for the morning session if they arrive after 9:00 a.m. The afternoon session begins at 11:30 a.m. and students will be considered absent if they miss more than one hour of instructional time in the afternoon.

Students will not be signed out after 2:40 p.m. If your student needs to be signed out before the end of the school day, please arrive before 2:40 p.m.

All medication required during the school day will be administered within the guidelines of state law. All medication, including prescribed medications, over the counter medications, cough drops, ointments, etc. must be administered through the office with the appropriate documentation signed by a physician on file. A Medication Form form must be submitted to the school prior to the administration of medication. The form can also be picked up from any school front office.

Electronic communication devices, including cell phones, smart watches, etc. are not allowed to be used during school hours. All electronic devices must be powered off and stored in the student’s locker for the duration of the school day.

Each school has a designated drop and drive zone that is designed as a quick drop off that does not require parents exiting the vehicle. Families using the drop and drive area should have students who are able to exit the car independently. When using drop and drive, please exit the drop off lane as soon as your child has safely exited the vehicle so that the line keeps moving and congestion is minimized.

For students who need more assistance, please find a spot to park and walk your child to the door.

All visitors must enter through the main office entrance. All volunteers must complete a background check annually.

Each school has a parent group that is run by a designated parent coordinator. Parent groups meet monthly. Please watch school specific communication for more information.
