Special Olympics and Unified Sports
Jo Brighton Special Athletes
Many of our students play sports for Jo Brighton Special Athletes as part of the Special Olympics of Michigan organization. All Jo Brighton students are eligible and sports are offered throughout the school year and Summer months. Parents and Guardians are responsible for transportation and supervision at practices and games. Sports offered include: kayaking, soccer, cycling, poly hockey, powerlifting, basketball, bowling, bocce, swimming and track and field. Athletes are required to have a physical on file with Special Olympics of Michigan prior to the start of the season. Sign ups for the different sports will be posted on the Jo Brighton Facebook page as well as in the JB Update newsletter. Family members are strongly encouraged to volunteer to coach or support our teams after completion of a background check and training modules.

Unified Sports
Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away. Unified Sports teams are available to students enrolled in our Satellite Classrooms at Roosevelt High School.
