Firearm Safety Awareness
The safety of our students is our highest priority, both inside and outside of school. In accordance with state law, we are providing the following annual information regarding the importance of safe firearm storage.
Securely storing firearms at home is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidental shootings, suicide, and unintentional injury among children and teenagers. Studies have shown that a majority of school shootings involve firearms taken from the shooter's home or a relative's home.
Key Safety Requirements for Firearm Owners
Secure storage: If a minor is or is likely to be present on your property, state law requires that all firearms must be unloaded and either locked with a locking device or stored in a locked container.
Prevent access: Secure storage prevents minors and other unauthorized individuals from accessing firearms.
Additional Resources
FREE gun locks: The Wyandotte Police Department is helping us distribute a limited number of free, state-provided gun locks to families. If interested, please contact the Wyandotte Police Department at: 2015 Biddle Ave # 1, Wyandotte, MI 48192; 734-324-4405.
Talking to your children: It is important to talk with your children about what to do if they see a gun. For example, the "Stop, Don't Touch, Run Away, Tell a Grown-up" message is a valuable lesson for children.
MDHHS resources: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) provides information on safe storage practices and preventing firearm-related injuries.
Ensuring the safety of our community is a shared responsibility. We ask that all families review this information carefully and take steps to ensure that any firearms in your home are stored securely and away from children.
