Athletic Code of Conduct
Roosevelt High School and Wilson Middle School administrators and coaches believe that those students who are selected for the privilege of membership on teams should conduct themselves as responsible representatives of their schools. In order to ensure this conduct, the Athletic Director and Coaches will enforce this Athletic Code. As recognized representatives of their schools, members of Roosevelt High School and Wilson Middle School teams must demonstrate the character and behavior outlined in the Code. Behavior of team members is to be monitored by coaches and school administrators in or out of season, in or out of uniform and whether on campus or off. All members of athletic teams have specific responsibilities. Participation in athletics is a privilege. Therefore athletes must follow some general rules and regulations. If any athlete is in violation of these specific rules and regulations, action will be taken.
Section I
An athlete representing any team in the Wyandotte Public Schools will be subject to disciplinary action if he or she commits any of the following violations:
- Falsification of a signature on the athletic permit card or physical form. If falsification occurs by a parent or another student, the athlete will be held responsible.
- Theft or vandalism of any school property, team property, or teammate’s property, including other schools facilities and property as visitors at away contests.
- Use of or possession of tobacco (all forms, including vapes), alcohol, marijuana(including marijuana/weed vape pens) or any illegal drugs or related paraphernalia or look alike or abuse of prescription/non-prescription drugs.
- Reported and verified inappropriate/negative use of Social Media (e.g. Making threats, references to substance abuse, etc.)
- Fighting
- Threatening or abusive actions or behaviors toward others (e.g. hazing)
- If a police report is filed that details the aforementioned violations, it is considered a violation of the Athletic Code of Conduct.
Each coach has the prerogative to establish additional training rules pertaining to the activity supervised as well as rules which may include attendance at practice, detentions, dress and general conduct of participants during practices, contests and trips (curfews on trips or school activities) and will be handled by the coach. These rules are also to be clearly communicated to the student/athlete and must be approved by theAthletic Director.
Section II
Any violation of the stated policy while the athlete is enrolled at Roosevelt High School or Wilson Middle School will result in the following action:
1st Offense
- Suspension from all athletic contests for one (1) week and/or at least one competition in the season with the student expected to participate in all practice sessions during that time. Parents will also be notified by the Athletic Director or Coach. Scrimmages are not considered contests. If less than one(1) week remains in that season, the suspension form contests will carry over to the next season that the student athlete participates in.
- If drugs or alcohol are involved the athlete must enlist in a counseling program through the school or community. In order to be eligible the athlete must have proof that he/she is enrolled in said program.
- The athlete may not practice until his/her coach has received notification from school administration that a preliminary contact has occurred. Voluntary admission of an infraction of a training rule regarding substance abuse will not result in a one (1) week suspension, but will count as a first offense. In such cases, a mandatory conference with the Counselor and/or the AthleticDirector is still required. The purpose of this provision is to allow an athlete to seek help.
- The voluntary admission may not be used by a student if the school is already aware of the rule infraction. This provision may be used only one time by any athlete.
2nd Offense
- After confirmation of the second violation the athlete shall be dismissed for the remainder of that season. If the infraction is in between seasons or if the student athlete is out of season (e.g. not participating in the Winter Season but plans to participate in a Spring Sport), the student will be required to sit out at least 50% of the regular season before being eligible to participate.
- The athlete may not try out or practice until his/her coach has received notification from school administration.
3rd Offense
After confirmation of a third violation the athlete shall lose interscholastic eligibility for one calendar year from infraction. More severe penalties than those set forth in the above guidelines may be imposed in extenuating circumstances.
These sanctions apply to all athletes whether or not they are actively engaged in their sport(s) at the time of violation. The penalties shall be cumulative beginning with the student athletes and parent/guardian signing this code of conduct and continuing throughout the school year and does not supersede Roosevelt High School or Wilson Middle School disciplinary policies which also apply. An athlete's eligibility can be renewed for the following school year for the first day of season practice through the appeal process.
Appeal Process
The Athletic Director is the first level of any appeal involving interscholastic sports. When necessary an appeal committee consisting of the Athletic Director and two representatives from the coaching staff (who do not coach the athlete in question) will convene for further review. The decisions of the coaches will stand until the appeal is reviewed.
Attendance
Any student that is not in school the entire day on the day of a contest is subject to not participating in athletic contests. Medical and Health Care appointments count as excused absences and must include documentation if student athletes are to participate. It is expected if a student is ill and does not attend school, they should not be practicing and coaches are to be informed. Coaches are to be informed of medical, health care related appointments, court dates, funerals, weddings, etc. or other family related issues that would require student athletes to miss school or practice. Student athletes that are not attending classes regularly are subject to discipline within the team, and possible removal from the team. The parent and Athletic Director will be informed of any attendance circumstances that would warrant removal from the team.
