Our mission is to teach all students to be purposeful learners, productive, participating and caring citizens who will establish and accomplish appropriate goals for both self and community.

Academic emphasis through:

                Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations
                                Researched/best practices used for instructional strategies
                                                K-3--reading (phonics based); hands-on math 
                                                                Gr. 4-12--core curriculum; computers/technology;
                                                                                    rigorous high school curriculum

 

                  ACCOMPLISHMENTS and DISTINCTIONS

·      No Child Left Behind: All schools have met “Adequate Yearly Progress”

·      Education Yes!:  All schools received A’s or B’s on state report card

·      Golden Apple Awards:  All 6 elementary schools received at least one $50,000 awards

·      MASB:  2003 Educational Excellence Award for all 6 elementary schools

·      Teaching Awards:  Milken Nat’l Teacher of the Yr; Mich. Educator of the Yr; Radio Shack Nat’l Science Teacher; Mich. Law-Related Ed. ·       Merit Scholarships: 2006 – approx. ½ graduating class received MEAP Merit Scholarships ($2500-$3000) for meeting/exceeding state standards in math, language arts, science, and writing

Transition emphasis: 5 schools/“houses” to create a smaller school within a school atmosphere; parent conferences with all 4 academic teachers
·      High school credit: Algebra—all 8th graders take algebra, computer apps.
·      Technology:  TVs & internet access in every class, 3 computer labs, high school credit computer class, automated/internet resource ctr.
·      Electives:  Choir, band, orchestra, art, technology, computers
·      Before/after:  Tutors, media center, computers, vending machines, breakfast
·      Opportunities:  “Do Something” shirts for participation extracurricular
Sports: Football, basketball, tennis, wrestling, volleyball, cheerleading, track, swimming, baseball, softball, cross country
Activities: Drama, peer mediation, Yearbook, community service, Builders Club, Science, Office; dances; activity nights
Travel:  Field trips, Komaki-Japan exchange; 7th gr. Chicago trip; 8th gr. Sleeping Bears Dunes trip & Toronto trip                
Competitions:  Geography Bee, Battle of Books, MSBOA band competitions, Knowledge Bee, Math League competition
Honors:  Nat’l Jr. Honor Society, honor roll, principal’s list, citizenship, academic awards, attendance, homework rewards

        ACADEMICS and Other Offerings--ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Schools:     Garfield, Jefferson, McKinley, Monroe, Taft, Washington
·      Academics:  Reading (phonics based); Math (hands on, problem solving); Writing; Science; Social Studies.
·      Technology:  TVs & internet access in every class, computer labs, automated resource ctr., multi-media equipment/assignments, computer classes; wireless infrastructure
·      Arts:  Vocal & instrumental music classes, physical education, art & media center weekly
·      Other:  assemblies, community service, peer mediation, safety patrol, clubs, after school choir, band/orch. gr. 5-6
·      Choice:  2 elementary theme schools:
        1) McKinley--extended yr., multi-age classes, multiple intelligences;
        2) Monroe—technology emphasized while teaching core curriculum
·      District Choices:  all open to all District children by application/availability

·      Athletics:  additional new high school gym including indoor running track & fitness/weight room; new athletic field for physical education, band, football (games & practices); 2 pools

·      Health:  Nursing services available on an as needed basis, immunization programs

·      Tutoring:  Offered in most buildings by staff, volunteers, community groups, grants

·      Special Ed.: Exemplary programming K-12; fiscal/operational mgt. of 3 sp. ed. regional centers for 18 districts:  Jo Brighton; Madison; Lincoln

·      Security: Police Liaison Officer; Attendance Officer; District Crisis/Response Team/Plan; ID badges for all staff/visitors; doors locked except main entrances

·      District of Choice:  Limited nonresident students accepted through application on an available space basis

·      Scholarship Foundation.:  WPS Scholarship Foundation. raises funds for scholarships for RHS grads—approx. 40+ per yr; Wyandotte Walk of Honor–brick walkway (brick @ $100); annual golf outing 2nd Sat., May; RHS replica collectible sold at Owl’s Corner; car donations (Charity Motors); Meijer’s Community Rewards
