Hunting Tips |
Candidates frequently ask for
suggestions on how can they "improve their chances" for getting a job,
or what can they do to "prepare for an interview?" Personnel
Director, Jane Allman, has been asked to speak
to numerous student teacher
groups at their university seminars. Here are some tips she shares:
Where to Find Job Postings:
- Web
pages, job search engines, i.e., MiREAP, JobTrak, local district web sites,
our web site; www.wyandotte.org,
Wayne County RESA's web site; www.resa.net.
- Respond
with brief cover letter and resume.
Resume Should Include:
- Make
it easy to read! A person shouldn't
have to search for the informat
ion.
- General
information to include – name, address, phone, email; do not send photo or
list personal information such as, age, height, marital status, etc.
- Educational
information to include:
- Education – school & degree (you do not
have to list year).
- Certifications – BE SPECIFIC, i.e., 7-12 DX,
6-8 EX, etc., or 6-8 Mathematics, 7-12 Science (if you don’t
know the subject area code).
- Teaching experience – school, grade level;
student teaching – name of critic teacher and their contact number.
- Other relevant educational work – teaching
assistant, coach, tutor, camp counselor, etc.
- Do
not send self-addressed envelope requesting information.
- If
asked to fill out a District’s employment application:
- Follow
directions!
- Character
references – people who know your background, character.
- Professional
references – student teacher critic is a must!
- No
relatives (or serious relationships) should be listed as references.
- Be
honest – false or incorrect information – automatic non-consideration or
dismissal.
- List any convictions, including misdemeanors,
but not minor traffic violations.
Initial Interview:
- Dress
– 1st impressions are everything! Dress professional!
- Know
total employment background, jobs you’ve held, what your duties were, etc.
- During
the interview – relax. Be careful not to give run-on answers.
- Do
not expect a response at the end of the interview.
Team Interview:
Be prepared to explain your views/beliefs/experiences
about:
- Successful
teaching practices
- Classroom
management
- Discipline
management
- Technology
experience/usage

- MEAP
knowledge/preparation
- Parental
involvement
- Extra
curricular activities
- You
may be asked to come back and teach a lesson.
Who will be on the Team Interview?
- Building
Principal(s), classroom teachers, parent(s), maybe a student(s), 5-7 people.
- Questions
will be asked round-robin style.
- Listen
to the question asked!!!! Answer
what is asked!!!
- Don’t
be afraid to elaborate – give an example…give two!
- Be
organized, sequential, and concise – no run-on answers.
Other tips…
- Everyone
knows you’re nervous!
- Get
there at least 15 minutes early.
- Don’t
forget to smile.
- Humor
is great, but not to excess.
- RELAX!
