Matthew Calhoun, 8, of Wyandotte is the ac-kid-emic spotlight pupil of the week.

He was nominated by Dawn Cramton, his third-grade teacher at  Taft Elementary School of Wyandotte.

Matthew is the son of John and Shironne Calhoun, and the brother of John, 11.  The family has a dog named Brittney.

Reading is the subject Matthew enjoys most in school, he said.  "It's fun to read to learn about new things," he said.  "I love books.  I am always reading."  He does very well in his other subjects, too, his teacher said.  "I love the challenge of doing math facts quickly," Matthew said.

He's a well rounded athlete, as well, and enjoys playing hockey, baseball, tennis, swimming and golf.  "Hockey is my favorite sport," Matthew said.  "I play for the Allen Park Huskies."  Someday he'd like to go professional and play in the National Hockey League.  But he has other aspirations for the future as well.  "I want to go to college and learn more about computers,"  Matthew said.

As the student of the week, Matthew will receive a four-pack of movie passes to any MJR Theater or Southgate Cinema 20 and a free class session  at the Southgate YMCA Fitness Center.
