Sue Rourke, Madison School Special Education Center

Who she is: Rourke teaches 3- and 4-year-old mentally impaired children at the Madison School Special Education Center, which is operated by the city of Wyandotte and serves 17 districts.

Background: Rourke earned degrees from Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University. She has worked in the district special education programs for 20 years.

Why nominated: Rourke works well with young handicapped children and creates a nurturing environment for her students and their parents. She has spent most of her career working with moderately impaired young children. If parents need outside help, she is able to put them in touch with the right support agencies. Rourke is a leader within the building and the district.

She says: "I like being a teacher ... just knowing that I was a part of each child's growth."
