Wayne Teacher of the week: Mary Ellen Caruso, Washington Elementary School

Who she is: Mary Ellen Caruso is a sixth-grade teacher at Washington Elementary School in Wyandotte.

Background: Caruso has been teaching in the Wyandotte Public School District for 31 years.

Why nominated: Caruso is a teacher who is dedicated to improving the lives of her students, her colleagues say.

She constantly creates new and exciting lesson plans. She initiated and ran a bank "branch" through the school, with interviews for jobs and training for positions, for her students to understand money and banking.

Caruso is an integral part of almost every committee of the district. She is a charter member of the first North Central Association accreditation process for Washington Elementary School.

She says: "I love being a teacher. I have fun creating special events, recognitions and learning for students, my colleagues, my school and my district."
