ac-kid-emic spotlight - The News Herald May 28, 2006

Avery Mullins, 11, of Wyandotte is the ac-kid-emic spotlight pupil of the week.

She was nominated by Denise Knapp, her sixth-grade teacher at Garfield Elementary School of Wyandotte.  Avery is the daughter of Christina and Brad Mullins and the sister of Jocelyn and Timothy.  The family has two Rottweilers named Nikki and Zeus and a Beagle named Max.

Avery said her favorite subject in school is math.  "You use math in everything no matter what it is, and it's fun," she said.  "Also, numbers stay the same no matter where you go".

She's an academic all star, and also plays softball, volleyball and basketball; runs track, studies guitar and participates in karate and gymnastics.

A future in medicine is what Avery looks forward to, she said.   "I want to be a surgeon because every time I do surgery, I'll save someone's life," she said.  "And if someone dies, I'll know I saved somebody else."

As the student of the week, she'll receive a four-pack of movie passes to any MJR Theatre or Southgate Cinema 20 and a free class session at the Southgate YMCA Fitness Center.
