Austin
Smith, 11, of Wyandotte is the ac-kid-emic spotlight pupil of the week.
He was nominated by Karen Miller, his sixth-grade teacher at Garfield Elementary School of Wyandotte.
Austin is the son of Louis Smith, Jr. and Crystal Smith, and the brother of Josh, 12; Brittany, 9; and Kristin 6.
His favorite subject in school is math, he said.
"I like math because you use it every day, " Austin said. "I also like it because it can be a challenge. I'm always up for a challenge."
He's been on the principal's list at this school since fourth grade, and earned a band pin this year.
Sports fills his time when he's not in school, he said.
"I played basketball for fourth and fifth grade, and we took first place," Austin said. "In sixth grade, I'm in cross country, and I took fourth place out of 100."
He is looking forward to his future education.
My dream is to get a scholarship to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in engineering," Austin said. "I would also like to play football or basketball."
As the student of the week, Austin will receive a four-pack of movie passes to any MJR Theatre or Southgate Cinema 20 and a free class session at the Southgate YMCA Fitness Center.
